My dresses are all pressed and hanging ready to go.... a few final prop touches and a few more beauty treatments and perhaps a few cheeky new tattoos and Ill be ready to head off for the most exciting and defining weekend of my life - I cant wait to see who Ill be at the end of it! All I know is, I'm going to be super proud of myself for getting up on that stage with a smile!

Happiest of birthdays to our own Miss Lady Abroad!

Guess that pinup? #3 REVEALED

This little lady was a show gal from a young age!
And her love of dancing has certainly not slowed down, from tap in her childhood to recently trying out rock and roll dancing.  The talents of this curvy Va Va Voomer don't stop there! I hear she is making ALL of her outfits for the Miss Pinup Australia Grand Finals and is also one hell of a baker :D

Can you guess who this sweet little smile belongs to?

Post your answers below and we will reveal all soon! xx

You ladies are too clever! Its the lovely Dixie O'Dare, our VaVaVoom Wild Card from NSW :)

5 Minutes with Ms Katt

Ms Katt, owner of Ms Katt's Kustom House, Miss Pinup Australia judge and sponsor, Barbie fiend and all-round kustom kulture konnoisseur, has been instrumental in bringing the Tasmanian girls to the Miss Pinup Grand Final. We took a little time out from practicing our Grand Final routines to find out what makes Ms Katt purrrrr...

What is your name?
Ms Katt

What do you do?
I make girls look and feel beautiful by providing them with gorgeous clothing, shoes and accessories at my store Ms Katt's Kustom House, in Hobart Tassie.... PLUS I collect Barbie dolls... And shoes!!!

Describe your personal style...
Hmmm, Modern Pinup with a bit of a psycho twist. I like classic cuts with just a lil bit of skull or zombie action!

Who are your 3 biggest pinup influences?
Picking 3 influences is too hard!! I think my influences change with my mood.... Right now.... I just adore Gil Elvgren's work, all the Elvgren girls are gorgeous, perfect pinups- I've just had one of his cowgirls tattooed on my left arm. I am also an enormous fan of modern Pinup girl, Sabina Kelly. She was one of my inspirations when opening my shop, she's just gorgeous and humble and she works really hard, which is something I totally respect. Esther Williams was magnificent, a truly beautiful and talented woman, so she's number three for me! She swam with Tom and Jerry, not to mention she produced the best range of swimwear on the modern market! What's NOT to adore?!

What does Miss Pinup mean to you?
I think it's all about growth, self acceptance and Self confidence. I have watched so many shy, quiet, self conscious girls come out of their shells and turn into beautiful pinups with no fear, it's amazing to see! Any girl who has the courage to enter this competition is gold in my eyes, because they have the guts to do something I'd probably be too scared to do! For someone to get up there, do their thing and gain so much personally, is just awesome to witness.

What's it like being a Miss Pinup judge?
It's an honour! It certainly is a challenge though, meeting all the girls and knowing how sweet and wonderful each one is makes it hard to take off your "friend" hat and put on your "serious judge" hat and judge in an unbiased manner, especially when you know background stories and what some girls have been through and survived... But I think I'm pretty good at it! At the end of the day this IS a competition and someone has to be named the winner!

What makeup item could you not make it through the Miss Pinup final without?
Really, just one?!! You OBVIOUSLY haven't seen my morning regime!! I'm going to have to say my foundation, I know it's my colour... I can borrow the rest from Miss Pixie!!!

What's one piece of advice you would offer competitors in Miss Pinup?
Love yourself, be proud of yourself, don't be nervous and most importantly HAVE FUN!!!

Can you give us a sneaky clue as to what you'll be wearing at the grand final?
I'm a girl that doesn't readily reveal secrets! Let's just say it's big, it's vintage and it's magnificent!!!

Looking for a last minute outfit for the Miss Pinup Grand Final? Ms Katt's Kustom House can help!

Pose for Five: Miss Scarlet Tinkabelle

We pose for five with Miss Scarlet Tinkabelle, Miss Illustrated Pinup Queensland 2011.

What's your pinup name?
Scarlet Tinkabelle

What does your pinup name mean?
I inherited Tinkabelle as a nickname quite some time ago from being both a shorty and a dancer. I've always loved the name Scarlet, and thought it would be a super cute way to embellish on my red splash in my hair!

Which pinup(s) have influenced your Miss Pinup journey the most?
I fell in love with Marilyn Monroe many many years ago. She has been a true idol of mine. I have to admit though, anyone confident and sassy enough to be a part of what we do is an inpiration to me! Miss Xymantha Marie (Miss VaVa Voom Qld finalist) has been my main influence, for if it wasn't for her gently guiding me, I wouldn't have ever thought it was possible for me to enter this glamourous and fun experience.

Which is your favourite Miss Pinup category and why?
The talent category! It's been a while since I have been able to perform, and dancing has been such a big part of my life in the past, which I miss being a part of, so it's great to have a reason to create and show off a little masterpiece! I also really love being about to watch and be amazed at how talented this lovely bunch of girls really are.

What makeup item can't you make it through the Miss Pinup Grand Final without?
Hmmm.... this is tough... just one you say?! I'll pick my Napoleon Aphrodite lipstick! One must ensure their lips are lushously pouty at all times right!

Pose for Five: Miss Lady Lace

We pose for five with Miss Lady Lace, Miss Perfect Pinup Western Australia 2011.

What is your pinup name?
Lady Lace

What does your pinup name mean?

I came up with this name when I was 14, I was the biggest fan of everything vintage, and decided I'd make myself a pinup name (not even thinking I'd get to where I am today). I started with wanting a title, something classy, so I chose "Lady" and then wanted to include something I'm passionate about, so added "Lace" as I love to sew, and lace is one of the most beautiful fabrics.

What does Miss Pinup mean to you?

There are so many amazing things about Miss Pinup Australia, not only is it so unique in the sense there's never been a contest such as this, but its such an amazing environment, I've competed and worked with many companies and competitions, and never have I encountered such a loving environment, everyone is so supportive, and helpful, there's no backstage crass or rudeness, if someone has a problem everyone helps out. Its truly an amazing experience, in which I've life long friends, I recommend any aspiring or professional pinups to enter this amazing contest. Thank you do Miss Pixie (and all out amazing sponsors) for being so fabulous, and putting this together!

What is your best pinup asset?
Hmm, my best pinup assets? I'd probably say my passion for all things vintage, without this love I'd never have pursued this amazing dream. I can't imagine a world without vintage glamour.

Which pinup, dead or alive, would you most like to meet?
There are so many pinups of the passed I'd love to meet, but I think I'd have to say Dita Von Teese. As cliche as my choice is, she is the first I saw of pinup and burlesque, and what lead to me to where I am today, she is a constant inspiration.

5 Minutes with Vintage Bettie

Miss Pinup has some amazing sponsors, supporters and judges including the delicious Lisa Jack, owner of Vintage Bettie (sponsor of the Miss VaVaVoom title at the Miss Pinup Australia Grand Final).
We took 5 minutes out of our Miss Pinup preparation to find out a little bit about Lisa!

What is your name?
Lisa Jack

What do you do?
I am the owner and operator of Vintage Bettie a Kustom Kulture Clothing and Accessory store in Rockhampton

Describe your personal style...
I would say Rockabilly, but I like adding my own twist, so that I "own" my own look!

Who are your 3 biggest pinup influences?
Marylin Monroe, I'm going to be her when I grow up, Betty Grable and Bettie Page, the 2 Bettie's I named my store after. Betty Grable because she was essentially a good girl and Bettie Page because she's a bit naughty and I would say that is me...

How and when did you get involved with Miss Pinup?
I've been a part of Miss Pinup Australia now for three years. I met Pixie whilst judging a pinup competition, our passion for the pinup lifestyle made us connect and the rest is history. Might I add I am very proud to be a part of this competition which I have watched grow and grow.

What does Miss Pinup mean to you?
Essentially to me it's about what it represents, it doesn't discriminate about age, about size, about who is the prettiest. I love the fact it has important morals and I definitely love what it has done for women and now our guys, you can see and feel the new found confidence they have gained.

What's it like being a Miss Pinup judge?
This is a tough gig, let me tell you! So many beautiful women and handsome men. Even though their has to be a winner, to me they are all winners, to get up on stage like that is difficult. I couldn't do it!

What makeup item could you not make it through the Miss Pinup final without?
My lipstick darling!

What's one piece of advice you would offer competitors in Miss Pinup?
Be yourself and you will have a ball!

Visit the Vintage Bettie website for all your last minute Miss Pinup needs.

Lady Marmalade says...

16 days to go until Miss Pinup Australia finals!
And how is Lady Marmalade feeling? In a word, EXCITED!

Yesterday I tried on all of my outfits provided by my lovely sponsor Miss Bonnie Rose, and bundled them all into my car and brought them home! It was like bringing home a new baby or a pet.  I kept going back into the cupboard to check on them to make sure that they were still hanging there and marvelling at how beautiful they are! I cant wait to put them all on and prance around like a pinup in front of a cheering audience! (well, lets hope there is some cheering!!)

Now just to finalise all of my prop making, finish off a hat I am making for Miss Ruby Rabbit and make those final beauty appointments before the big day! A pinup has to be finished top to bottom

Don't forget to check out our 'guess that pinup' page for some further insights into our competitors, and check out the other blog pages and let us know what you want to know about the pinups by posting comments.  Maybe you have a favourite pinup and you would like to leave here a message or wish her good luck in the finals, or maybe you would like to ask her or him (don't forget about those darling guys!) a question! Let us know and we will see what we can do to answer you xx

I'll leave you tonight with a tip from a 1950's home economics book, advising young women on how to be a good housewife (and excel in that career)

TIP 1. Have dinner ready: Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal on time.  This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him, and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospects of a good meal are part of the warm welcome needed.

Guess the Pinup? #2 REVEALED

Our 2nd pinup lady is a fan of sports and isn't afraid of getting under the hood of a car or on the back of a motorcycle ;)
She too is a fan of body art and now sports a few tattoos of her own.  A picture of innocence here, has she changed I wonder?

Can anyone guess who this cheeky little smile belongs to?
Post your answers below and we will reveal soon!

That's right! Its our own Miss Illustrated Runner up from Tasmania, Miss Booty Bunny.... (who might I add looks mighty fine underneath the hood of that car!  xx)

True Vintage classic pinup doll or modern Reproduction pinup babe ?

We have such a vast array of beauty competing in the grand finals of 2011/12 that we thought we would ask your opinion.

Do you like your pinup from top to tail in true 1950's glamour? You know, fascinator colour co-ordinated with a vintage pair of heels & matching gloves, full skirted dress with a sweetheart neckline, layers & layers of tulle and finish it off with a pair of seamed stockings?

Or do you prefer your pinup in some reproduction, modern twist on vintage. Picture a pair of bordello heels and figure hugging wiggle dress ?

What's your preference ?

Lady Marmalade says...

Well its a lovely rainy Tuesday in Melbourne and I am meant to be lying in bed for the 7th consecutive day keeping my hip rested but Miss Marmalade has a bit of cabin fever so its prop hunting day for those final bits and pieces!

On the list is:
  • 1 x old style metal bucket  (who would have thought those things would be so hard to find! - so far I have managed to find 3 in Adelaide but the person wont post them)
  • 1 x old style mop
  • 1 x old alcohol bottle (he he - don't think Ill have a problem with this one!)
  • 1 x Dance Card (or crafty things to make one)
I am heading out to a few of my favourite antique haunts in the hope of success so wish me luck!

I see the specialist on Wednesday about my hip so fingers crossed I get the all clear for no surgery as this could cause some serious issues for my posing in stage for Miss Pinup :D

Hopefully the judges will forgive me if I'm a limpy pinup!

In other pinup news, a big mention should go out to the lovely Ruby Rabbit, Catalina Colie, Rouge Noir (one of last years contestants for taking Halls Gap by storm this weekend at the Hot Rod show, and to our own Madame Blavatski for being a sponsor and dressing Miss Ruby.

And if you haven't checked out our new 'guess the pinup?' page, best hop to it kittens.

Lady Marmalade xx

Guess the Pinup? #1 REVEALED

Well ladies and gentlemen, yes its finally here!

The first of our fun little games to help you get to know our beautiful competitors a little bit better, kicking off with a few giggles at some blasts from the past and some childhood photos of when we were just baby pinups, some of us performers already (you know who you are!) but always adorable!

Our first pinup was a bit of a pageant queen from her early beginnings and has had style since childhood which has has carried through to adulthood today.  She now sports a bit more skin art but has still kept that same adorable smile.  Can you guess which of our Miss Pinup Australia Grand Finalists this little cutie is?

Leave us a comment and tell us who you think she is - we'll reveal the answer soon!

A few of you guessed it! Its our very own Miss Illustrated Victoria, Cheech Sanchez

Pose for Five: Miss Elsie Van Elke

We pose for five with Elsie Van Elke, Miss VaVaVoom Pinup Victoria 2011.

What's your pinup name?
Miss Elsie Van Elke

What does your pinup name mean?
I just liked the sound of it mostly! I wanted a ‘vintage’ first name, that could have belonged to a pinup in the 40’s or 50’s. And the last name reminds me of one of my favourite animals!

Which pinup(s) have influenced your Miss Pinup journey the most?
Gorgeous pinup gurus Miss Pixie and Helen McLean have both taught me so much about pinup posing - especially how to make the most of my 'good bits' and find flattering angles; I’ve loved sharing ideas and practicing with dolly dynamo Cheech Sanchez; and the beautiful Catalina Colie has helped me remember not to take myself too seriously!

Which is your favourite Miss Pinup category and why?
To watch, I’d say evening wear – I love all the gorgeous frocks *swoon*! For performing, I like lingerie the best. I get to bring my polar bear Vargas on stage with me, and he’s such a ham!

What makeup item can't you make it through the Miss Pinup Grand Final without?
Red lippie of course! At a guess, I’ll probably re-apply it about 20 times over the course of the evening..! Trying not to think about the trace levels of lead that might be in there according to recent reports <fingers in ears> “la la la la”!!

Oh-oh...Wardrobe Malfunction!!!

Miss Sundae Belle, Miss Illustrated Pinup (Live Heat) 2011, gives us a sneak peek into her pinup diary...

Ok, so all my outfits are all sorted and i'm pretty happy with them and quietly confident that'll look great on stage. I have my daywear outfit and props ready, my swimwear and it's routine down pat, my lingerie is super cute and my evening wear is devine. And then, disaster strikes!

Only 4 weeks out from the big night my evening dress arrives from the magical land of eBay and AAARRRGGHHHH!!!! It's waaaay to big and my lady lumps hang out the side of the top. Although the bottom half can easily be taken in, there's no way of altering the top section to fit and still look good. What am i going to do? I'm freaking out!!!

Roughly 5 or 6 days later, a second disaster occurs. My Mum has lovingly made me a vintage style peasant top worthy of a Gil Elvgrin painting. Thanks Mum! I try it on with the cute cherry print full circle skirt i had visioned pairing it with...BUT OH NO! Due to my, well let's just say 'womanly' figure and E cup chest, i look like a jumping castle partially inflated. I feel in no way attractive let alone confident enough to stand up infront of hundreds of onlookers including my beautiful pinup peers and strike a pose. Great, now what am i supposed to do?

Well, after posting my severe disappointment on Facebook, i was instantly reassured that all would be fine and that i would "look beautiful no matter what" i wear. Not only that, but i was offered many dresses and outfits to borrow not by my friends, not my family but my fellow competitors. That's right. The girls who are competeing AGAINST for the title of Miss Pinup Australia. I was gobsmacked, blown away. Why are these girls offering me their garments instead of rubbing their hands together like some cartoon villian? Why? Because these women are ladies. These women have amazingly big hearts and are genuinely sincere in their support. I haven't met most of them (other than our daily convos via Facebook) and yet i feel so loved and encouraged by them that they seem like old friends. They're like the friends you have as a child that no one else can see, but you.

I think that because Pinup is such a positive culture, the women that are part of it are genuinely supportive of others. We share such an amazing passion that gives us so much joy, that we can't help but want to share that with others...especially other pinups.

The 2012 Miss Pinup Australia contestants are such a fabulous group of women, i for one feel truly blessed to be part of the whole thing...whether i win or not at the Grand Final, i already feel like a winner (cliche i know).

So, what am i going to do about my wardrobe malfunction? Well, i have a wonderful woman making me a new dress from a vintage Butterick pattern for my daywear section ,and i will re-use the evening dress i had made for the Miss Pinup Australia Live Heat (where i won the title of Miss Illustrated) that was taken from a design sketch in the book "Pretty Things: The Last Generation of Burlesque Queens". It would have been nice to have all new outfits, but what i find far more exciting is getting to finally meet in person all the wonderful pinup girls i've grown so fond of. Thankyou all for your support and kind offers of help, i truly do appreciate it...and you.

xxx Miss Sundae Belle

Let's hear it for the the boys!

Miss Pinup isn't just about the lovely vintage ladies - there's eye candy FOR the ladies too!

For the first time at a Miss Pinup Grand Final, some very handsome gents will be battling it out for the title of Mr Pinup.

Those of you who saw the boys in action at the state finals will agree that those of you who haven't yet seen the boys perform are in for a real treat! Handsome, funny, clever, stylish - these boys sound like the ideal man - and they probably are!

If you haven't already acquainted yourself with our lovely lads, let us introduce you:

Mr Tim Van Sin
Mr Pinup South Australia 2011
This young gent set the stage on fire and made all the ladies in the audience swoon at the South Australian state final last year with his cool-as-a-cucumber moves and retro style.

Mr Roger Rebel
Mr Pinup Runner Up Victoria 2011
Roger had the Victoria state final crowd in stitches with his balloon manipulation skills that he demonstrated by making Miss Pixie a poodle. And looking dapper in his tux, the ladies in the audience were no doubt envious of Roger's wonderful wife, Miss Ruby Rabbt (Grand Final Wildcard).

Mr Johnny Rockett
Mr Pinup Victoria 2011
Johnny 'the pocket' Rockett posed to perfection at Victorian state final, wowing the audience with his baseball-themed sportswear. And in true rockstar fashion, it seems only fitting that his beautiful wife, Miss Bettie Jean, took out a matching title as Miss Perfect Pinup Victoria 2011.

Pose for Five: Miss Veronica Bloom

We pose five quick questions to find out a little bit about what makes our finalists tick!

What's your pinup name?
Veronica Bloom

What does your pinup name mean?
Veronica is taken from two sources; firstly from the divine American film actress and pinup, Veronica Lake. She was a femme fatale and known for being confident and assertive. She had long hair, quite uncharacteristic of the mid-century and she used to have it tossed to one side of her face...sensually shielding one of her smoking hot eyes.

The other source of my name Veronica comes from my favorite spirit, absinthe, a flavorful highly potent alcoholic beverage which inspired some of the greatest artists the world has ever known. ‘Veronica’ is an ingredient, particularly of my favorite blend of absinthe.

And finally, “Bloom” - well, that was inspired from my dear friend Dusk Devi Gold, a model, photographer and contemporary pinup who has always encouraged me, not just to shine but to BLOOM!!!!

Which pinup(s) have influenced your Miss Pinup journey the most?
Aside from the above mentioned pinups that have influenced me on my pinup journey, I have also been inspired by the Italian pinup Monica Bellucci. That gaze. Those curves. Goddess!

Which is your favourite Miss Pinup category and why?
My favourite pinup category has to be the one I represent; Miss VaVaVoom Pinup.

I feel that we are honored to represent beautiful women with curves. Western society typically deems models and pinups to be ultra thin, long and lean. We of this ‘category’ are rubenesque and challenge notions of what a pinup model looks like. The truth is beauty comes in many shapes and sizes. Miss Pinup Australia has to have categories in order to run an event and celebrate all fabulous forms but beauty is more than a size... there is no size that is more “real” than others... we are all “real” in our many varieties.

What makeup item can't you make it through the Miss Pinup Grand Final without?
Eyeliner has to be my pinup essential. I have to have the “Marilyn Monroe” look... her brows were shaped ‘just so’ - quite pointed... and the eyeliner went along the bottom of her eye lid... from about half way or three quarters of her eye, flicking out to the side - giving her that sultry look. It was quite a simple look really and it it can be replicated almost as soon as a pinup wakes from her beauty sleep.
